ARTIST STATEMENTS
I’m always enthusiastic to discuss art, so don’t hesitate to ask me something :)
In all except theatre, I consider my skills to be self taught. The ownership I have of my skills and artwork is something I take great pride in.
Art has always been an important outlet for me, a tool used to understand and communicate with myself and the world around me. Starting with a love of drawing, my art practice has only grown as I’ve gotten older- expanding into multiple other forms seen here on my website.
I describe the common theme of my work as ‘bitter sweet’.
I showcase and explore the duality of life’s moments- the sadness and joy, the past and futures, the bitter and sweet- all coming together as one in my work. I love exploring the human condition in my storytelling; the connections between people, and the worlds around them. I endeavour to create work that speaks to a truth I believe in- whether that be difficult or hopeful
Art to me is a language, and a tree with many branches. Each catagory of art has different criteria, some deserving of public recognition and some meant for private fulfillment-all that I share with the world is something I consider to be art for one reason or another.
My work is a part of me, and I believe that communication of, or to, the soul is the key in making something artful.
I’m very passionate about everyone making art. I want to stop people saying they “can’t” draw or write or make anything. I truly believe it’s art to be a fundamental skill of humanity.
Expression is so very important to the world.
Photography:
My preference for photoshoots is to work on-location as opposed to in-studio. I’ve pursued this because I love working with natural light, as well as the unpredictability of the outdoors. I’m required to be open to discarding any plans I might’ve had due to weather or external factors interfering with my shoot. I enjoy this challenge and find it fuels creativity. There’s a specific energy and liveness in location photography that I enjoy.
When working with models it is my priority that they are comfortable and confident. Beautiful images come easily when the model feels beautiful.
I love dynamic and provocative lighting; high contrast full sun, or a honey-like golden hour are two of my favourite lighting conditions.
I work with both DSLR and Film photography depending on the purpose of the shoot. I tend to work with film for more artistic or recreational photos instead of largescale professional shoots.
I’m really interested in pursuing documentary, fashion editorial and casual/intimate portraiture.
Writing:
My storytelling aims to represent the truth of the situation. I create realistic and grounded characters that feel familiar.
My process is very instinctual and without a strict structure, I tell the story how I hear and/or see it in my own head.
I’ve been praised for making my writing entertaining and full of my personality. Even if commenting on the sometimes harsh realities of life, I am able to inject my dry, sarcastic and sometimes dark humor into the work, making it accessible as a source of escapism for audiences.
I’ve always found that I communicate better through writing so this is an artform I am excited to develop in my career, in both fiction and non-fiction contexts.
Stage, Screen and Performance:
Theatre and filmmaking are such diverse artforms, I find their individual and shared strengths interesting.
I love projects with a lot of emphasis on character (diversity), storytelling and meaning.
I want to create an experience audiences feel transported by, and I want to know why I’m making something.
I tend to work traditionally, without excessive tech involvement, as I find this helps ground the story and characters.
I especially admire set and costume designers and love to work closely with different departments to elevate the art we make.
As a performer my strengths lie in naturalism within dramatic texts or comedic improv. I do not have strengths in physical or melodramatic performance forms
Digital and Traditional Fine Arts and Crafts:
I was always ‘the art kid’, It has been a foundation of my identity since childhood. I’m really pleased and grateful to still have passion for these activities as an adult.
With my drawings and paintings I either work from imagination or a photograph depending on the project, and aim to bring the feeling of the moments into the artwork- exploring through drawing what those images could be.
Crafts is a recent hobby of mine that I’d like to share professionally. I’m finding it to be a very fun way to challenge myself in terms of creativity, confidence and problem solving skills.
Creative Direction and Assisting:
I have many skills which make me a good leader; patience, (creative) problem solving, initiative, and more.
I enjoy knowing what’s going on with multiple departments during a project and helping to organize the workflow of each.
I am always ready to work with people to get the best of the situation, resources, time and talent available to us.
I’ve led some projects at university both in and out of my course, and would be proud to add more experience in these roles to my portfolio.
